The practice of massage therapy is regulated under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA) and is therefore a Regulated Health Profession. Only individuals who have completed the requisite training and have met the strict competency requirements of the College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia (CMTBC) can call themselves a "Massage Therapist" or a "Registered Massage Therapist".
When seeking massage therapy, look for an individual who uses one of those two titles and ask to see their registration with the CMTBC.
It is in your best interest to seek massage therapy from a Registered Massage Therapist.
An RMT has completed a 2-3 year program at a recognized school of massage therapy;
An RMT has passed an entry-to-practice examination that ensures they have the competencies necessary to safely and effectively offer massage therapy services;
An RMT must participate in a Quality Assurance program with the College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia, a program that assists in the maintenance of professional standards and quality care;
An RMT is accountable to the College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia, through the complaints and discipline processes, in the event that the services they provide to not meet the standards of practice;
An RMT Provides a receipt that will be accepted by your extended health benefits plan for reimbursement.
For your first massage try to arrive 10 minutes earlier before your treatment to complete a confidential health history form, then your Massage Therapist will propose a personalized treatment plan based on an initial assessment and health history. The assessment consists of various tests to determine the condition of your muscles and joints. Any personal and health information you provide to your Massage Therapist is completely confidential and will be safeguarded. Your health record cannot be released or transferred without your written consent.
Feel free to ask questions before, during, and after the treatment and give feedback to your therapist regarding techniques, pressure applied, etc.
Drink plenty to keep your tissues hydrated. An Epsom salt bath is recommended to soothe and calm muscles and enhance the benefits of the massage. It will help to alleviate stiffness you may feel the next day. It is recommended for the use after workouts for the same reason.
